Backup and Restore
Your records stay on the device you use. If you switch devices or delete the app, they disappear with it, so you need to export them out from time to time.
It’s a basic feature of this app that your records stay only on the device you use. Because nothing is sent to a server, there’s no risk of it leaking to anyone else — but the flip side is that if the device is gone, the records are gone too.
That’s why you need to export them out from time to time. Exporting creates a single file, and a backup isn’t complete until that file is stored somewhere off the device. If you leave it sitting on the device, it disappears along with the device.
The most important moment is right before you switch devices. Even if you have a backup from a few months ago, anything logged since then isn’t in that file. Just remember to export one more time before you move.
The file contains your dose and symptom records. Keep it in your own email or personal cloud storage, and don’t upload it to a folder that several people share.
Step by step
- Export about once a month This creates a dated file. Even if you don't have many records yet, it's better to make it a habit.
- Keep the file somewhere off the device Email it to yourself or upload it to cloud storage. If it only stays on the device, it isn't a backup.
- Leave the file name as it is It needs to keep its date so you can tell later which point in time it's from.
- Export one more time before switching devices Any records logged since your last backup won't be in it. The moment right before you move is the most important one.
- Install the app on the new device and restore Loading the exported file brings your earlier records back.
Worth knowing
Frequently asked questions
-
How often should I back up?
Once a month is enough. But always do it one more time before you switch devices or delete the app.
-
Can I open the backup file and look at it?
It's formatted for the app to read back in, so it isn't really readable as is. If you need material to bring to a clinic visit, use the report feature instead.
-
I restored, but I don't see my records.
First check that you restored the right file, and that the dates you're looking at fall within the period covered by that file. Records logged after the backup was made won't be in it.
-
I lost my phone and I don't have a backup.
Unfortunately there's no way to recover it. Your records existed only on that device. Even starting fresh, a pattern will start to take shape again within a few days.
